Sun care
How to choose sunscreen and how much to apply

Quick answer
A good sunscreen should protect against both UVB (the SPF value) and UVA. The face and neck need about two finger-lengths of cream; reapply after sweating, swimming and towel-drying, and every two hours outdoors.
What exactly does SPF tell you?
SPF (sun protection factor) shows how well a cream protects the skin against the UVB rays that cause sunburn. Under laboratory conditions SPF 30 blocks about 97 per cent of UVB rays and SPF 50 about 98 per cent. The difference looks small but is significant in terms of how much radiation reaches the skin.
The SPF value says nothing about UVA rays, which play a role in premature skin ageing. So make sure UVA protection is also stated on the pack.
How much should I apply?
Sunscreen SPF values are measured by applying 2 mg of cream to every square centimetre of skin. In daily life this equals roughly two finger-lengths of cream for the face and neck. Most people apply about half that, in which case the real protection is well below what the label says.
- Apply the cream 15–20 minutes before going out in the sun.
- Do not forget your ears, the sides of the neck, the nape and the hairline.
- Reapply every two hours outdoors and immediately after swimming or sweating.
Is the SPF in make-up enough?
The SPF in a BB cream or foundation is usually not enough on its own, because nobody applies two finger-lengths of foundation to their face. The safest approach is to apply sunscreen as the last step of your skincare and treat SPF make-up as an extra layer.
Do I need it in winter and on cloudy days?
Yes. UVA rays reach the earth at almost the same intensity all year round and can pass through clouds. Snow reflects light and increases exposure. If you use acid peels, retinol or anti-spot products, daily sun protection is even more important.
Croen Sunscreen Cream SPF 50+ is a 100 ml face and body sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection.
Frequently asked questions
Should I choose SPF 50 or SPF 30?
For everyday city life SPF 30 is enough for most people. Choose SPF 50+ for fair skin, strong sun, beach and ski holidays or while using peels.
Does sunscreen clog pores?
Not every formula suits every skin in the same way. For oily skin, a thorough cleanse in the evening largely prevents congestion caused by sunscreen.
How long can an opened sunscreen be used?
Follow the period-after-opening symbol on the pack (e.g. 12M) and do not leave the cream in a hot car.
