What are ceramides? Understanding the skin barrier

Quick answer

Ceramides are natural lipids that fill the spaces between cells in the skin's outermost layer. They play a key role in keeping the skin moisturised and forming a barrier against external factors. Ceramide moisturisers are used to support this structure in skin with a weakened barrier that feels tight and stings.

How does the skin barrier work?

The outermost layer of the skin is often compared to a brick wall. The bricks are dead skin cells; the mortar between them is a lipid mix of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids. Ceramides make up most of this mortar.

When the mortar is intact, the skin keeps its moisture in and makes it harder for irritants to get in. When it weakens, moisture loss increases and the skin reacts faster to external factors.

Signs of barrier damage

  • Tightness that lasts long after washing your face
  • Stinging or burning from products that never caused problems before
  • Flaking and a rough texture
  • Skin that reddens easily and is sensitive to hot–cold changes

The most common causes include over-washing, frequent exfoliation, harsh cleansers, dry air and sun.

How to use a ceramide moisturiser

Ceramide creams are applied morning and evening to cleansed skin with a gentle massage. They work with regular use; do not expect a big change from a single application.

Croen Moisturising Ceramide Cream contains Ceramide 3 together with panthenol, bisabolol, aloe vera, niacinamide and shea butter; it is formulated for sensitive skin. For salons, the 500 ml Moisturising Skin Care Cream with ceramides is also part of the professional line.

What to pause while repairing the barrier

If your skin has become sensitive, stop acid peels, grainy products and new active ingredients for a few weeks. Simplify your routine to cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen. Once your skin has calmed down, reintroduce actives one at a time and use them less often.

Frequently asked questions

Are ceramides suitable for oily skin?

Yes. Oily skin can also have a weakened barrier; ceramides do not make the skin greasy but support the barrier's structure. You can choose lighter-textured formulas.

Can ceramides and hyaluronic acid be used together?

Yes, they complement each other. Hyaluronic acid draws water into the skin, and ceramides help keep that moisture in.

How long does the barrier take to recover?

Because skin renewal takes a few weeks, most people notice relief after 2–4 weeks of a regular, simple routine.
