How to use hyaluronic acid: the 4 most common mistakes

Quick answer

Despite its name, hyaluronic acid is not an exfoliating acid but a humectant that draws water into the skin. It works best applied to slightly damp skin and followed by a moisturiser. It can be used morning and evening with almost every skin type.

What does hyaluronic acid do?

Hyaluronic acid is a molecule that is already present in our skin and can hold a lot of water. In cosmetics it is used as a humectant: it draws water into the upper layer of the skin and helps the skin look plumper and more supple.

On ingredient lists you may see it as "Sodium Hyaluronate", "Hyaluronic Acid" or "Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid", a form broken into smaller fragments.

4 common mistakes

  1. Thinking it exfoliates because it is an acid. Hyaluronic acid does not peel like AHA or BHA; it is easily used on sensitive skin too.
  2. Applying it to completely dry skin. Humectants cannot work as expected if there is no water to draw in. Apply it right after toner while the skin is slightly damp.
  3. Not applying moisturiser on top. Especially in dry air, you need a cream on top to lock in the moisture hyaluronic acid draws in.
  4. Thinking "the more, the better". A few drops of serum are enough. Too much product leaves a sticky feeling.

Its place in your routine

A simple order is: cleanser → toner → hyaluronic acid serum → moisturiser → (in the morning) sunscreen. Hyaluronic acid works well with ingredients such as vitamin C, niacinamide and ceramides.

Among Croen products, the Collagen Serum, Moisturising & Purifying Toner, Vitamin Complex Serum, Tea Tree Oil Serum and BB Cream SPF 30 contain hyaluronic acid.

Frequently asked questions

Is hyaluronic acid suitable for oily skin?

Yes. Because it draws water, not oil, it hydrates oily skin without feeling heavy.

Should hyaluronic acid be used in the morning or evening?

Both. In the morning apply it before sunscreen; in the evening, before your night cream.

Are hyaluronic acid and collagen the same thing?

No. Both occur naturally in the skin but are different structures; in cosmetics both are used for a feeling of moisture and suppleness.
