What are AHA and BHA? Before you start acid cleansing

Quick answer
AHAs (glycolic and lactic acid) are water-soluble and loosen dead cells on the skin's surface. BHA (salicylic acid) is oil-soluble and can reach into the pores. They should be used together in the evening, with daily sun protection.
The difference between AHA and BHA
AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) are water-soluble acids. Glycolic acid and lactic acid are the most common in cosmetics. They loosen the bonds between dead cells on the skin's surface so they shed more easily, leaving the skin smoother and brighter.
BHA (beta hydroxy acid) in cosmetics almost always means salicylic acid. Because it is oil-soluble, it can mix with the oil inside pores. That is why it is preferred for skin prone to blackheads and congestion.
Croen AHA + BHA Peeling Effect Cleansing Solution combines glycolic, lactic and salicylic acid; the formula also contains zinc PCA, provitamin B5 and hyaluronic acid.
How to use it
- Use in the evening after removing your make-up.
- Apply the product to a cotton pad and wipe your skin with gentle movements.
- Keep away from the eye area.
- Then apply your moisturiser.
- Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen the next morning and throughout the period of use.
A good method is to start every other day in the first weeks and adjust the frequency according to how your skin responds.
Why is sunscreen a must?
Acid products thin and renew the skin's upper layer, so the skin becomes more sensitive to the sun. This applies in winter and on cloudy days too. As long as you use an acid product, apply a sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection every morning.
Who should not use it?
As stated on the product label, acid cleansing products should not be used in the following cases:
- Atopic, very thin, sensitive, broken or allergic skin
- Areas recently treated with laser or electrolysis hair removal
- Children under 3 years of age
Before starting, test the product on a small patch of the area you plan to treat. Do not combine it the same evening with another peel, retinol or a clay mask.
Frequently asked questions
Can AHA and BHA be used every day?
Some skin tolerates nightly use, while other skin is more comfortable with every-other-day use. Reduce the frequency if you notice tightness, stinging or flaking.
Is stinging after an acid cleanser normal?
Mild, brief tingling can occur. If there is burning, marked redness or blistering, rinse the product off and stop using it.
Can it be used in summer?
Yes, but you need to be far more careful about sun protection. Taking a break during periods of intense sun exposure is safer.
